3 Trends in Leadership 2024

Recent research on leadership has highlighted several evolving trends and critical insights that are shaping how we think about leadership in 2024:

  1. Leadership Ambidexterity: A key focus is on developing "ambidextrous" leaders—those who can simultaneously manage today's challenges while preparing for future transformations. Research indicates that only 12% of senior leaders naturally possess this dual capability. To address this gap, organizations are encouraged to foster experimentation mindsets, allowing leaders to engage in micro-experiments that drive innovation while maintaining operational efficiency/ IMD Business School

  2. Intersection of Leadership and AI: The integration of AI into leadership roles is becoming increasingly critical. Leaders are now expected to navigate the complexities of human-AI collaboration, using AI for enhanced decision-making while also managing the ethical and cybersecurity challenges it presents. This intersection is reshaping how leaders approach strategic planning and workforce management / IMD Business School

  3. Purpose-Driven Leadership: There is a strong emphasis on aligning leadership with a clear sense of purpose beyond profit. This approach resonates with employees and consumers alike, especially in the context of global trends like sustainability and social justice. Leaders who can articulate and drive a purpose-driven agenda are seen as more effective in engaging and motivating their teams / IMD Business School, McKinsey & Company
